Elm Tree Primary recognised with national award

Elm Tree Primary School has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of its remarkable transformation and unwavering commitment to inclusivity, community engagement and academic excellence.

The school, part of Evolution Academy Trust, was nominated in the ‘Making a Difference – Primary School of the Year’ category of the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

Located in one of the UK’s most deprived areas, Elm Tree has defied the odds. Nearly half of its pupils fall within the top three deciles for deprivation, yet the school has seen a dramatic rise in academic achievement — with Year 6 SATs results in Reading, Writing, and Maths soaring from 4% to an impressive 86%.

This success is underpinned by a broad and inclusive curriculum, dedicated staff and a strong focus on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). British Sign Language is integrated into lessons, and a protected PSHE curriculum ensures every child feels seen and supported.

The school’s leadership team has tackled recruitment challenges head-on with a ‘grow and train our own’ strategy, developing teachers, teaching assistants and even employing former pupils and parents. This approach has strengthened the school community and created a nurturing environment for both staff and students.

Beyond academics, Elm Tree is deeply embedded in its community. Pupils lead charity initiatives, raising thousands for causes like WellChild and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The school also supports local foodbanks, partners with the police and church, and offers outdoor learning through its pioneering ‘Discover the World’ woodland programme - the first of its kind in the UK.

Parental engagement is central to the school’s ethos, with flexible drop-offs, regular events and open communication channels. Support for young carers and families with SEND is robust, and staff development is a top priority - reflected in outstanding satisfaction scores.

Headteacher Julia Halliday said: “We are delighted that Elm Tree has been recognised for 'making a difference' within our community. It acknowledges the dedication and commitment of our staff and children - in fact the whole Elm Tree family! I am so proud to lead this amazing school.”

Evolution Academy Trust CEO Dr Craig Avieson said: “On behalf of everyone at our Trust, I congratulate Julia and her team for everything they have achieved at Elm Tree. Their passion and enthusiasm for enhancing the experience for all children is an example to us all, and they should be very proud of their success.”
