Former Costessey Primary pupil returns to school after signing first professional contract with Everton
A former pupil of Costessey Primary School returned to the school last week to meet the children and the teachers who helped nurture his early sporting talent - just months after signing his first professional contract with Premier League club Everton.
Seventeen-year-old Melvin Matos, who grew up in Norwich and attended Costessey Primary School from Year 3 to Year 6, visited the school on 25th September. Melvin joined the Norwich City Academy before moving to Everton in 2024, and this summer took the next major step in his football career by signing his first professional contract with the Premier League club.
During his visit, Melvin met pupils and took part in a PE session alongside his former sports teachers, Mr Hill and Mr Goreham, who taught him during his time at Costessey Primary and remember his enthusiasm and ability on the sports field.
Mr Hill said: “It is fantastic to see Melvin come back to Costessey and to see how far he has come. Even when he was at primary school, he had a real love for sport and a determination to improve. We’re incredibly proud of him and it was be brilliant for our children to meet him and hear about his journey.”
Following the PE session, Melvin stayed on to meet pupils for photographs and autographs on the school field at the end of the day.
His return visit provided an inspiring opportunity for current pupils to meet someone who once sat in the same classrooms and took part in PE lessons at the school, and who is now beginning his career in professional football.
