Bignold Primary first school in country to win award for diabetes care

Bignold Primary School and Nursery has become the first school in the country to receive the new Good Diabetes Care in School award since it was relaunched in September 2025.

The award from national charity Diabetes UK recognises schools who make sure children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes get the care and support they need so they can reach their potential. It demonstrates Bignold's commitment to providing high-quality support for pupils living with diabetes, and celebrates a school that works effectively with families and healthcare professionals to ensure children with diabetes can participate fully in all aspects of school life, while receiving the care and support they need to thrive.

Staff at Bignold have worked hard to ensure robust medical procedures, individual healthcare plans, appropriate staff training and strong communication with families are in place, helping every child feel safe, included and supported throughout their school day.

Kerry Baker, Assistant Head and SENCO at Bignold, said: "We are delighted to receive this award from Diabetes UK. We believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued and able to access every opportunity school has to offer. This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff, the support of our families and the strong partnership we have with healthcare professionals to ensure that children with diabetes receive the very best care at Bignold."

Steve Paxton, Diabetes UK Volunteer Outreach and Partnerships Officer for Midlands and East Region, said: “Diabetes UK is delighted to present Bignold Primary School with our Good Diabetes Care in School award! The application demonstrated the flexibility required to care for a child with type 1 diabetes, which is a complex condition. The staff go above and beyond to make sure that appropriate support and care is given, allowing full inclusion in school life and they should be commended for their efforts.”

The family of a child at Bignold with type 1 diabetes added: "This school has been excellent in including children... in all aspects of school life. They go out of their way to make sure that he is supported appropriately to take part in all that is available, encouraging the family to allow the child to do so."
