Poplars celebrates five Strong Ofsted standards following significant school improvement

Poplars Community Primary School in Lowestoft is celebrating a highly positive Ofsted inspection, with the school achieving the Strong standard in five key areas, recognising the high-quality education, care and support provided across the school.

The school achieved Strong standards for attendance and behaviour, early years, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards were also met, with achievement and curriculum and teaching both meeting the Expected standard.

Inspectors identified the school's "highly inclusive culture" as a significant strength, finding that pupils, staff and families feel welcome and valued. They praised the school's work to ensure pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), disadvantaged pupils and those facing additional challenges are able to "achieve and thrive".

Attendance was also recognised as a significant success. Inspectors found that attendance is now above average and that behaviour incidents have reduced considerably. Behaviour across the school was described as "extremely positive", with calm and purposeful classrooms and pupils consistently meeting leaders' high expectations.

The school's early years provision was also judged to meet the Strong standard. Inspectors found that children "thrive" in an inclusive and stimulating environment, progressing rapidly from their starting points and developing strong foundations for their next stage of education.

The report recognises significant improvements in educational outcomes. In 2025, 79% of pupils achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics combined, compared with 62% nationally. Inspectors noted that achievement has improved over the past two years following improvements to the curriculum.

Particular success was seen for disadvantaged pupils, with 75% achieving the expected standard across reading, writing and mathematics combined in 2025, compared with 47% nationally. Inspectors recognised that disadvantaged pupils achieve well and that the gap with their peers nationally continues to narrow.

Inspectors also praised the positive relationships between staff and pupils, the extensive programme of enrichment opportunities and the school's support for pupils' wellbeing. Pupils were described as confident, resilient and reflective and are being prepared very well for life in modern Britain.

The report also recognises the progress made by the school's leadership, finding that leaders have "successfully addressed the weaknesses identified at the previous inspection", strengthened inclusive practice and raised expectations for attendance and behaviour.
